From School Library Journal

Gr 5–9—This dual narrative shifts the point of view between Lauren, in prose, and Sierra, in verse. Sierra has just been placed in foster care in Lauren's rather wealthy neighborhood after her mother was arrested. Lauren is missing her brother, who was recently sent to a special boarding school for kids on the autism spectrum. She is also outgrowing the relationship with her best friend and neighbor, Ashley. Lauren's social conscience has been awakened, and as she realizes that many do not have the resources she has, she decides to make a concerted effort to welcome Sierra. The two form a bond; but when Lauren comes up with a plan for raising money that involves theft, albeit for a good cause, Sierra becomes understandably anxious because she has a lot to lose. This unique story of friendship features two striving yet flawed main characters. Sierra is close to her mom, though she often has to take on the role of parent in their relationship. Lauren's examination of her privilege is admirable. Her Robin Hood scheme is not. The depiction of her growing compulsion to steal/shoplift is absorbing and suspense ratchets up with each theft as the stakes rise. Thoughtful readers will find a lot to like here—sadness, suspense, even humor. They may even pause to consider their own privilege. VERDICT Great for fans of dual narratives or books like Lynda Mullaly Hunt's One for the Murphys.—Brenda Kahn, Tenakill Middle School, Closter, NJ

Review

"Thoughtful readers will find a lot to like here—sadness, suspense, even humor. They may even pause to consider their own privilege." (School Library Journal)"Each character is well defined . . . Readers will hope for a better life for both girls. This middle grade novel will find a ready audience in most libraries." (VOYA Magazine)"Sierra’s narrative, in poetry, captures her spare, cautious, and constrained life. Lauren’s prose is rich and descriptive, much like her own experiences. Together, the contrasting narratives tell a touching story about friendship, loyalty, and resilience that will have lots of appeal." (Booklist)“Two authors combine their efforts to relate the intertwined tales of a pair of young teens in trouble…  Many of the complications of human behavior are on display here, some of them painful to navigate.” (Kirkus Reviews)“Like a kaleidoscope, Lauren and Sierra’s shifting perspectives will make you look at the world from different angles, transforming in unique and beautiful ways. This story shines.” (Lisa Graff, author of Lost in The Sun)“This should hit the mark for middle grade readers who enjoy life’s complexities paired with the intrigue of secrecy.” (Erin E. Moulton, author of Flutter)“An inventive and emotional story about family and friendship.” (Erin Entrada Kelly, Newbery Honor winner for Hello, Universe)

"Sometimes, the best thing we can do for anyone is to let them fall. This is the best - maybe the only- way to help them."This story involves so many truths that I think kids who are getting into the middle school scene need to read, hear, and be involved in. Whether they are dealing with the issues in Every Shiny Thing personally, or have heard/see others who are struggling, it is a necessary conversation that needs to be had. I had a lot of people come to mind as I was reading this story - ranging from students past and present to adults that I know and/or have known. I hope this story reaches many many kids over the years. The dual perspectives really do help to see the way others think - dealing with addiction themselves, or dealing with a loved one who struggles with addiction.

I'm such a sucker for alternating POV books, and yet, I hold them to high standards. Both perspectives need to be equally compelling, both characters need to have equivalently high stakes and distinct interior worlds. EVERY SHINY THING gives us two characters from very different backgrounds. Lauren's family is affluent and stable, but her older autistic brother's departure for a special school several states away has left her unhinged. In his absence, she turns to a new, quickly developing, well-intentioned but ultimately troubling habit. Sierra, the daughter of two addicts, is settling in with a foster family next door, and in Lauren she finds a big-hearted fast friend. But there's a troubling undercurrent to this friendship that hearkens back to Sierra's relationship to her alcoholic mother. This upper middle grade story is wonderfully realistic -- the level of detail and character development is really extraordinary. My heart ached for Sierra, whose POV is told in free verse. And I was worried sick about Lauren! Oh my gosh, my heart was pounding as this story reached its climax. But perhaps what I admired most was how, through Sierra and Lauren's story, the authors try to tackle a really complex subject. We live in a country with such incredible inequality that it can feel hopeless from the point of view of a middle schooler. What *can* we do about it? I love the way they broach this subject and I'm so glad this story is out in the world. We need it.

Lauren misses her brother. Sierra is trying to find her way with a new family. They become fast friends - but what happens when friendship becomes unbalanced? Do you keep a friend's secret even when you know what she's doing is wrong? Sierra, disempowered and lonely, is forced to go along with Lauren's misguided scheme to use her privilege for good. This book is a lovely and touching middle grade novel. I loved the alternating perspectives (especially seeing one protagonist from the other's perspective, and knowing all that is simmering and unsaid between them) and the blend of poetry and prose, and I grew to love both main characters with all their flaws and complexities. I also loved the fully fleshed out families, and the rich school life, with all the anguish and joy and enthusiasm that feels so real and present at that age, barely hidden under the surface. Bravo to authors Jensen and Morrison.

Morrison and Jensen have masterfully crafted a novel that does justice to the individuality in two girls' diverse perspectives while honoring a commonality that can bring us all together. I encourage parents, teachers, and caregivers to read this book alongside your young ones, particularly in light of conflict that arises from perceived differences in our schools and in our politics. I have worked in public education for 15+yrs, as a teacher and administrator, and have learned from my students, free from the bias of adults, about the power of friendships to unite us -- as Morrison and Jensen attempt to teach us through the lenses of their protagonists. What a beautiful thing it would be if we could read each other as easily as we read Lauren's and Sierra's narratives!

What an excellent upper middle grade read! I couldn't put this book down. The story was absorbing, the characters were compelling and real, and the message was thought-provoking for middle schoolers. Chapters alternate between prose and verse, which gave the book depth and provided interesting perspectives. I was impressed by how seamlessly the authors wove the narrators' stories together to create this delightful and important book. And the ending made me teary, but hopeful. This is a solid, engaging choice for middle school readers.

Every Shiny Thing is everything I love in middle grade fiction. It’s a book I enjoyed reading as well as a book I’ve been loving reading to my class of 5th graders. Since the description is above, I won’t go on about what it’s about instead I’ll tell you why I loved it. The alternating POVs are done so beautifully and I was not more interested in one POV than the other, that is KEY. Sierra’s beautiful narrative poetry is heartbreaking. Lauren’s side told in prose is a powerful story about good intentions gone wrong. The strong writing and emotion of the story allow readers to connect with the story. I love finding books I can read to my students while also enjoying them myself! The authors don’t talk down to the reader which I know my students enjoy. Definitely a must read!

Every Shiny Thing is a heartwarming story of two girls from very different backgrounds who find common ground and together contend with the challenges life has sent them. A story written in prose and poetry the reader is moved gently and artfully between the girls' perspectives and the unfolding story of their growing friendship.

Every Shiny Thing is a compelling and beautifully told story with real and relatable characters. The alternating prose and verse chapters and outstanding writing and storytelling really bring Lauren and Sierra to life. I loved this book and can't wait to read more from Laurie Morrison and Cordelia Jensen!
