About the Author

KURT A. RAAFLAUB completed his Ph.D. in Switzerland, served eight years as co-director of the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, D.C., and is now professor emeritus of classics and history at Brown University. His main fields of study are the social and political history of the Roman republic; the social, political, and intellectual history of archaic and classical Greece; and comparative history of the ancient world. ROBERT B. STRASSLER is an unaffiliated scholar who holds an honorary Doctorate of Humanities and Letters from Bard College and is chairman of the Aston Magna Foundation for Music and the Humanities. He lives in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Overall, this is without a doubt the definitive edition of Caesar's commentaries. The quality of the footnotes, maps, and appendices meets or exceeds that of the other Landmark editions, and greatly improves the reader experience. If one is going to read Caesar unassisted, this is the best way to go. I have another copy of Caesar without all of the Landmark extras, and this is my second time through Gallic Wars; I got a lot more out of it this time through.I own and have read all of the other Landmark editions, and marked this down to 4-stars solely because of the appendix issue other reviewers have mentioned, i.e., that most of the appendices are on the web and not in print. I had my doubts when making my purchasing decision, and almost didn't buy the book just for that reason. Now that I have completed reading Gallic Wars and am about halfway through Civil Wars, I have found that it is even worse than I expected--having this content on the web instead of hard copy is just as unpleasant as I feared it would be, almost (but not quite) to the point that I wish I had not bought it.Most obvious is the need to have an internet-ready device at one's elbow while reading the book in order to get the main benefit of having all of the supplementary information at one's fingertips. I thought perhaps this would be just a minor annoyance, but I'm finding it more and more irritating as I progress. In addition to the raw inconvenience, the visual experience of jumping back and forth between a backlit screen and printed matter is not always easy on the eyes.Not all readers will agree, but my own preference is to read works such as this in their printed versions. I'm also a bibliophile, and I enjoy owning the printed matter. For these two reasons, I am often willing to pay extra to get printed copies of what I am reading. I don't buy everything this way--I own a couple hundred e-books as well, and for some books this works out OK. But I think this is one book I want to own in its printed form.It is hard to fathom the publisher having a stated goal of keeping the book under 1000 pages. I have a number of high quality books that significantly exceed that length, and their publishers had no problems with bindings or book size--it can easily be done (and has been). By marrying a printed book to an on-line electronic appendix set, they have managed to achieve the worst of both worlds, sacrificing the convenience and portability of a book published electronically in its entirety, while producing a stunted and incomplete print version. It can't even be loaded on Kindle unless you want to use PDF. This was a major mistake by the publisher, and there is a good chance I will not buy the next book in the series if it is produced like this.At a MINIMUM, these appendices could have been made available as a companion volume for additional charge. Not perfect (since the reader would be dealing with two volumes), but still better than what we ended up with. Personally, I would have paid extra to have ALL of the content in a single volume. For those having expense as a chief concern, Caesar's classic works are available on line for free without the annotations, and now such a reader will have access to the on-line Landmark essays for free as well, with the production expense borne by those who purchase the book. (I assume that the writers did not produce their appendix work for free.)

No issues with the content of this volume; it’s what’s not included that’s the problem. I share the frustration of several other reviewers with the publisher’s decision to relegate the essays to a website, rather than include them with the book.I do not want to have to constantly refer to a webpage while reading the book; how would I do this if I am not online? Must we always be forced to read with a connected web device by our side? In that case,why buy the physical book at all? Just publish it as an e-book.And how am I supposed to store my printed copies? In a 3-ring binder that won’t fit on my bookshelf, and would look terrible if it did?The website states that the web essays “are an integral part of the book.” This is objectively false; they have been separated from the book. If they were intended to be “integral” they should have been included. Or have we “literally” re-defined “integral” to mean “separate”?I really hope that this misguided decision is a one-off that won’t be repeated with subsequent volumes in this series.

The Landmark series has set a very high standard for excellence in the area of editions of ancient authors. In my opinion, this volume of Caesar's work edited by noted ancient historian Kurt Raaflaub raises an already very high bar. The volume is worth the (relatively modest) price simply for the introductory essay and the superb maps, but what readers get in addition is a veritable cultural history of the late Roman Republic through the copious and judicious notes, photographs, and explanatory material after the texts. The amount of detail on individuals alone is simply stunning. And let's not forget the text itself. Raaflaub's translations are clear and compelling, and the decision to include all of Caesar's commentaries as well as those frequently published or grouped with them (but not by Caesar himself) was excellent. The book taken as a whole--even leaving aside the superb essays by numerous, eminent scholars of Roman history available at the related website--may very well mark a new era (and a renaissance) in the study of Caesar. Through this volume, students and scholars alike may very well come to realize that Caesar's life, works, and the socio-political world he inhabited form one of the most interesting and valuable periods in European history. I feel some pity for any ancient historian who plans to tackle a Landmark volume after Raaflaub.

I assume that the publisher will soon get it together and post the promised essays online.In the meantime, this new Landmark edition is just as good as any of its predecessors. I have been reading it for the past three days, and I am engrossed. It has been a long time since I read Caesar's commentaries, and I don't remmeber my previous read as being so enjoyable.The definitive volume on Caesar's Wars has now been produced... Enjoy it.

Not much I can say about the content. Like him or not, Caesar was one of history's most compelling and controversial figures. When crossed by a non-Roman his response was often genocidal. With fellow Romans he could be both generous and merciful. In addition to being one of the great military commanders, he was also one of Rome's great orators and is still admired today for his facility with the Latin language.The annotation is why you should purchase this book. In keeping with the Landmark tradition, the supporting text is awesome. Almost every action, thought, geographic location, etc. is accompanied by explanatory text.PS-Does anyone out there have a hardcover copy of Landmark Arrian they're willing to sell for a reasonable price? I have all of the others. Somehow I missed that one.
