Just reviewed my notes from this book again because I believe it is a valuable reference for all of us who know too well the embarrassment, isolation, and grief that come from our runaway words. It covers flattery, gossip, digital words, learning to be a better listener, tone (how to say what you say), controlling angry words, the beautiful ways to use your words for good, arrogance and humility, the power of prayer to guide our words, and how to communicate appropriately with others in various situations and relationships. I love the list of powerful phrases to share with parents, spouse, children, and friends--words we all long to hear but no one ever thinks to say until its too late. There are quotes to cut out and a handy summary guide at the end of each chapter. There is even a yummy recipe tied into the theme of the book, but I won't spoil that for you. Very clever! What I treasure most in this book is Mrs. Ehman's unflinching honesty about herself: her motives, thoughts, mistakes. Moreover, I sincerely commiserate with her on the issue of receiving hurtful comments from friends and family on her weight. She has sage advice for that situation, too, if it is something you might also be dealing with. For Mrs. Ehman and fellow Christians who struggle with weight, I would tell her that I have recently discovered the most entertaining and inspiring book which is nevertheless packed with a solid plan to help with that issue by entirely changing the way we think about food. It is called Skinny School by Julie Gordan, an inspired Christian advocate for women's marriages and health. It is a weight-loss self-help book that reads like a romance novel but acts as a workbook. You will love it.Thanks to Mrs. Ehman, there is hope for us that we can learn to harness the power of our words to make the most of them and minimize collateral damage.
I think the book has a lot to offer, and the personal questions portion of the study guide definitely helped me to dig deeper and examine areas that I needed to apply some of the principles too. That being said, If you have read the book, then you don't need the DVD portion of this study. It frustrates me to purchase a DVD for a study only to have it reiterate what is already written in the book without adding anything new to it. Other than the short portion after each session in which Melissa Taylor talks with Karen Ehman, the sessions are taken almost entirely from the book - at times word for word. If you are someone who doesn't like to read the book then this will be great for you, but if you read the book, skip the DVD and just buy the study guide.
I had no idea that this book would mention Jesus or Bible scripture so many times. I didn't even know it was a religious book. That's not necessarily a bad thing; I'm not Christian, but I can appreciate Christian values. However, the Bible is a significant part of the book. Also, the book spends much of the time explaining why speaking out loud can often get one in trouble and hurt others or one's self. I already knew this, which is why I bought the book. I didn't need someone to tell me why I need to keep my mouth shut more. I was hoping the book would provide more suggestions on how to be mindful about one's mouth. There is some helpful advice; most of the advice has to do with prayer--a lot of it-- and being compassionate for others. This could easily be translated into the Buddhist principles of mindfulness and lovingkindness, and that is the frame I used when reading this book as a non-Christian.
After reading this book, I learned just how dangerous my mouth really is. It is able to hurt and encourage others, and can really have a lasting impact on other peoples' lives. Oh, how I learned that even saying nothing (the silent treatment) can by deadly. The timing of our words can really make a difference in how our thoughts can be interpreted. It is also quite funny that I did not notice it was a book geared toward the female audience. As a guy, I only figured it on sort of in the end, with the closing prayer. While I may not be a chatterbox and tend to keep my mouth shut in most situations, I learned that my mouth of few words still needs the help of God and prayer in order to speak words of grace with lace.
The writers point of view seems be one of a lifestyle with a fair amount of privilege and therefore has an implied feel of being naive and weak. I was expecting a strong lesson in high discretion. This text is more a self centered biographical sketch of someone who spends a lot of time on committees, used to being the center of attention and probably hasn’t had any life experience that has placed her in mortal danger or any degree of serious conflict. Save your money and stick with the book of James. I made 1/3rd of the way through and just couldn’t do it. This text smacks of a vanity press run with no serious editing or reconsideration of style.
My mouth had landed me in troubles in the past, at school, at work, everywhere but of recent I had an issue with someone and my mouth turned it into a big mess. I finally realized i need to work on mouth. While looking through google for help on how not ro talk too much, I stumbled on this book...bought it around midnight or so and finished it by 8am....waoh! this book is a blessing....it was comforting to know I am not the only one who have trouble with my mouth...Lol and most importantly that there is a way out. I feel some stories in the book could have been more condensed....too much details on those stories but overall this is a very good book. If you have problem with your mouth, get this book. I will definitely recommend this book to people and also buy the hard copy. I dont want to spend the rest of my life without this book....Also got the 40 days devotional....sticking important sentences on my walls to remind me of what I read every day..... I believe I have a solution to my mouth problem....God bless the author if this book (Amen).
