Ed Sheeran: A+ The Unauthorized Biography by David Nolan is a fascinating look at this unlikely star's rise to fame.I am a fan of Mr. Sheeran's music but if somehow, you haven't heard him, here is a great place to start: https://www.amazon.com/Thinking-Out-Loud/dp/B00JLJ185C/Reading this book, it's very hard to believe he will only be 26 next month! But his drive to make music has been directing his life since he was 11 years old. Some of the experiences that brought him to his current level of fame (and skill) left me shaking my head, wondering at and in complete awe of his fearlessness. He actually traveled to the US as a young teen simply to learn from master guitarist Preston Reed!This book covers his exceptional family and teachers, as well as musicians and others in the industry, who recognized his extraordinary talent and tenacity early and did their bit to foster it. There are plenty of quotes from Sheeran himself, as well as those around him.At times, the story seems almost unbelievable. Case in point - he spent one night sleeping on the street near Buckingham Palace because, as a struggling musician, he had no couch to crash on that night. Just a few years later, he was a celebrated entertainer at the Queen's Jubilee in that same palace. Another time, he spent a couple of days ignoring call on his cell from an unknown number who turned out to be Sir Elton John.While this biography doesn't gloss over the few years Sheeran spent drinking far too much after gigs or his drug use that plays prominently in many of his lyrics, it also does not dwell on the missteps of youth.This charming, baby-faced singer is also shown to be creative and inventive about marketing himself to an audience who might look otherwise overlook someone who looks less like a rap/blues star than practically anyone on the planet. Despite having left high school early to pursue music, he's proven himself quite savvy in the marketing aspects of music. Amazing.This book will certainly appeal most to Sheeran's fans but it's also a bit of a field guide for aspiring young musicians. I enjoyed it.
