I liked and hated this book as it is too basic and simplistic in places; too beginerish; but, maybe that's my problem..Some four years into the Scene I took a couple years off from doing "the Dom thing" other than in scene play from time to time. Back to M/s of late, trying my hand as Master and Sir, I thought I could for sure use some help; some ideas how to do a better job. Like many men, I've been beaten down by a thousand books from the 70s forward on being politically correct and all nicey nice around male/female relations. Even though I'd had some Dom experience and read a dozen books on BDSM I ordered Vol. 1 and finished it this morning. One can read it in a few hours. It does read easily and is generally written well.Likes:I liked the cover, the size, the feel and the price of the actual book. It will be fun to take these three small volumes and pass them around at a munch for a discussion on how one learns to be a Dom, since Doms are supposed to come from the womb all badass and jerks and knowitalls. Or so we are told.I liked that he compares a male Dom/Master's job not unlike a 1950s household. Yes, some of us who wanted that fantasy enjoy M/s and Dom play as we actually get to BE that for a time.I liked and found some good tips among the 49 "Must Know" tips; about ten I'd say.Larocco (not his real name I guess; we don't know if he's 18 or 58 or even lives in the US) understands that BDSM is adult play and not the Real World. Even for 24/7 folks, it's not the real world. Nobody can be successful dropping all one's non-Scene friends to be only and always kinky. Come on. Also, he understands that BDSM is not just playing with pain and pleasure but arm chair therapy; a place one can work out stuff. Nice. And, he sees much of kink as role play and performance art and playing with intimacy. I agree with him here.Didn't Like: He reveals NOTHING of himself as a person; how he learned his Domliness. Some syntax and editing errors, too. No excuse here. Also, he seems only to pontificate (as Doms often do) what indeed is the True Way of kink. Only on occasion here and there does he hint that there might be another way. The tone is humble though; but the delivery 95% is "This is how you do it" to do it right. So, I will read the other two books of his in the series; I'm sure I'll learn a thing or two. I'm happy with the money and time exposed to his writing. Three stars.PS. Reading now "Dr. Bob" and his Master/slave Mastery-Updated and will try Robert J. Rubel Ph.D and M. Jen Fairfield's follow-up title for 5+ yrs. BDSMers and Leather folk, Master/Slave Mastery: Refining the fire, as I've found that he has presented at conferences on this matter for years.
This book is very helpful and informative for anyone interested in learning more about the BDSM lifestyle. The book starts out by providing an interesting history of the origins of BDSM which is something that other books don’t include and then goes on to address the common misconceptions that many people may have about BDSM. The book also thoroughly explains the roles of dom and sub which is very helpful for people that are new to the lifestyle and terms. The book is divided up by the topics, and each section contains a number of tips which really adds to the material. Definitely a must read for anyone interested in the BDSM lifestyle.
This book deals with the true heart of BDSM. It's more about the attitude required to be a good Dom/me, than a physical technique book. It's about creating a Dom/me who is well rounded, that the sub will be attracted to naturally. Very helpful...now I'm movin on to the next book in the series.
I've given this a 4 star as it's very informative about the lifestyle, history, and roles. I did catch a few grammatical errors, though, they do not take away from the information being shared.
After the movie and research, one can get confused about reality. Larocco brings home what everyone is actually looking for. Dom is in the title, but this is what anyone wanting to know what a sub wants should be looking here first.
If you're serious about this, then not a lot of this book will come as a surprise. But, it may still be something that you need to hear, or a thought you've had, and couldn't put into words like this. This book should help you make the first steps correctly.
Good starter tool which will help to form a solid foundation in becoming a well trained and respected Dom going forward
A great intro to the lifestyle and great basic knowledge. I hope to learn more and continue to grow in my knowledge
