Confession: I am a reluctant traveler. However, Judith Fein's "Life is a Trip" invites the reader to consider travel more than a journey of miles and experience. It asks each of us to embrace travel as a journey for the soul. I, literally, made myself read only one chapter an evening so I could savor the images, insights and inspirations of each story. Whether meeting a humble prisoner director in Mexico or a former Viet Cong guerrilla fighter, I found myself changed. Fein calls us to a deeper sense of our selves. This book is NOT a collection of interesting stories about people from around the globe. It is about spirituality, in the best sense of that word. It is about faith, in the best sense of that word. It is about trust. It is about honesty. It is about healing. It is about love. As a religious leader, I will be using Fein's book as a resource for reflection and community worship. If Fein were designing my map for traveling, my days as a reluctant traveler might well diminish. Enjoy the trip!
In Life is a Trip, Judith Fein has provided us a collection of travel stories that takes us beyond the particular locations, sights and sounds and even beyond Fein's personal point of view and allows us to journey with her into our own self discoveries. She engages the reader in such a way that she allows us to experience both the routines of travel and the excitement of new discoveries in a personal and unique way. She leads us into exceptional insights about the world and about ourselves. The book itself is a journey, not a lecture; it is an adventure, not a how-to book. However, the reader will certainly gain an increased understanding of how to travel the mysterious and exciting world waiting for us. The reader will gain knowledge about the places Fein visits, but she well makes her point that travel is much more than learning new facts or seeing new sights or eating new foods. She transforms routine encounters with people, landscapes, and culture into exceptional journeys of the spirit. She transforms even the most exotic worlds into increased self awareness and healing of mind, body and spirit.
Delightful, funny and honest. Judith Fein took me by the hand with the first line of the introduction and didn't let go until the last line of her acknowledgements. The fourteen stories are so down-to-earth and real that I felt I was "THERE"; feeling her apprehension when Ana, the curandera, gave her a solo healing, and her chagrin at the reaction of the Samaritan High Priest when she told him she had eaten camel. Her "back-peddling" out of that one was hilarious. I almost always read the thanks and dedication to any book before I read any of the contents. Fein's tribute to her husband, Paul Ross, grabbed me and I knew I'd found a great book.I recommend this read to anyone who wants to be THERE, where ever they travel. Fein tells us how.
Judith Fein has been a travel journalist for two decades following various earlier careers. This book is informed by travel, but it is not about travel. Place, language and geography play very small roles. Fein is really an anthropologist and a (spirit) seeker. After hundreds of journeys and days of travel around the world, she has carefully selected a dozen personal stories to share in this small book. Her prose is sparse, precise and telling. Hemingway would approve. The author describes universal values and experiences from her exotic travels. Culture, spirit, humanity and stories really matter. History, community, journeys, pilgrimages, language, tradition, food and clothing support life. Individual humanity, value, respect, dignity and family links are priorities for all.Positive, indirect solutions are transformative. Walking, singing, laughing, dancing, echoes, shadows, mysticism and ecstasy often rock the world. There is a universal deeper level of human experience, unexplained by science. Healing, trembling, belief, participation, prayer, tomb experiences, faith, salvation, candles, witchcraft, positivity, forgiveness, mystery and connections with the afterlife are viscerally REAL. This window to the universal is often revealled in the poor, the small, the incarcerated, the outcast and the overlooked. The author stands at the border of Western modernity and exotic historic cultures. She shares, but does not explicitly judge or evaluate. It is unspoken, but there is a clear accusation, trial and conviction of modern, secular culture as being sterile, busy, formulaic, disconnected, materialist, unsatisfying, uncurious and dead-end.This is a very thought provoking book for modernists who follow Paul Tillich's dictum to passionately pursue all matters of ultimate concern. Real, authentic, meaningful life is available everywhere for those who seek it. Travelers who are open to unplanned experiences will learn and grow.A first reading of this book is quick and the depth may be hidden. Read it again. As Fein notes, the second pilgrimage is the most satisfying.
This book is a chronicle of Fein's travels and her reflections on what she sees and who she meets. It goes to show that travel really is transformative. Inspiring read!
